Fung shark fin soup - neodada art-talk project between Fung Lin Hall and jtwine

/
This project is a collection of email correspondences between Fung Lin Hall, Japan born chinese american - or dubious asian american from Tokyo now living in the desert/McCain country (one of her dogs is from Mexico) and the German born San Francisco based jtwine alias Jurgen Trautwein.

The idea to the project started through my misspelling of Fung Lin's name as Fung Fin.
She did find it funny and responded with Fung shark fin soup. I was kicked by that and we decided to publicize our correspondence under the title Fung shark fin soup. There we go...

Shark fin soup originated in Asia and recipes date back over 2000 years. The soup was once a rarity available only to the aristocracy, primarily because it was so difficult to create. However, times have changed, fishing boats have improved, fishing nets are exponentially longer, and China's growing middle class has created an increased demand for this "delicacy."

Today, shark fin soup is routinely sold in trendy restaurants throughout Asia. Creating the soup is difficult because the fins must be cooked for a very long time until they separate into needles of cartilage that look like clear noodles. The fin itself has no taste, but is served with a broth of chicken, ham, and shiitake that it absorbs. Although numerous countries have made it illegal to harvest sharks for their fins, Hong Kong - Disney's new pal - is actually the world's largest trader of shark fins.

Shark fin soup is erroneously considered an aphrodisiac or regarded as beneficial to one's health, although studies have shown no healthful benefits. Ironically, the methods used to prepare shark fin soup reduce the water content of the fin, which concentrates numerous chemical impurities. Shark fins studied at the University of Hong Kong contained 5.84 parts per million (ppm) of mercury, compared to a maximum permitted level of 0.5 ppm. The high presence of mercury was confirmed in independent tests conducted by two state-related labs in Thailand, and the findings are also reflected in US, Australian, and New Zealand governmental reports.

In plain English, this means that eating shark fins could render men sterile due to the high mercury content. source Bangkok Post 10/05 2004 for more info check NY times artikle.

what a disgusting business!

I was looking in Chinatown for some shark fins, but couldn't find any. Found deer antlers and super nature power instead. j

The Chinese will never give up on Shark fin soup - it's a tradition - any celebration, wedding whatever.

Since this project is supposed to focus predominantly on art, check out Fung Lin's post on contemporary Chinese art Mahjong, currently shown at the Berkely art museum.
The exhibition concept doesn’t derive from mahjong, but it plays with it. It’s a game with 144 stones and you will have 12 groups of 12 stones. …

Sidewalk spill painting

Somebody supposedly accidentally dropped a gallon of white paint from the 3rd floor of a building on the sidewalk on Hyde and California Street. To me a beautiful unintended masterpiece.

Cruising the city outside the mainstream gallery & museum driven art machine, I found those "accidental" abstract paintings. To me, they are highbrow, unpretentious, unintended paintings, just cross outs or tags painted over. This stuff reminded me of some color field painters or Serge Poliakoff's work and some of Hans Hoffmann's paintings.

Fung Lin Hall mentioned James Brooks to me and shortly after she provided me with the following links.

Praba Pilar and L.M. Bogad - we remember the sun performance at the SF art institute

LM Bogad

Neruda by Praba

L.M. Bogad and Praba Pilar performed on 9.11 an original piece commemorating the anniversary of an infamous terrorist act: the CIA-assisted military overthrow of Chile's democratically elected President, Salvador Allende
. This rooftop ritual rememberd the sun of hope and rebellion that shone around the world a generation ago, with its triumphs and failures, its precious solidarity and numerous betrayals.
I did like the multilayered complexity of the performance and how the audience got involved in the piece.

one of the multiple performance sets, it could be a play as well, great script and research.

another set of the performance, great tower piece, very intense...

GG riders

This video fragment is from a golden gate bridge ride on the 76 bus. The only MUNI bus leaving San Francisco and crossing the bridge to Marin headlands (on sundays and holidays). The bus riders are a unique crowd of 90 % regulars, mostly single, retired males, having their chats about whatever. In summertime some stranded tourists are joining in to drive up to the vermillion gg bridge.

Unidentified African Landscape, paintings by G. Wessmann

Old Sun, 2008, Oil on Metall , 120 x 95 cm

Painting as a trace of memory. A shadowed light blue, a burning red, a corrosive stripe of purple combine to a picture. Wessmann calls it KARIBA after the dam constructed between 1955 and 58 in the Sambezi valley. Behind this wall of concrete and steel lies a reservoir, that before the erection of the Assuan-dam at the upper nile was the largest dam of Africa, But Wessmann quotes neiher the technical construction nor the topografic of the area or the prosperous wild- life which has it`s habitat there. Wessmann shows colors, recalling what he has seen. These colors are echoes. Echoes of lasting impressions. As the title of the picture is not describing, but sounds like a mysterious formular recalling the place mentioned: KARIBA...

jtwine's white noise at Rhizome art base

white noise got promoted to the Rhizome art base
White noise is a noise- color-composer or a noise- color association interactive game simulator. An experimental approach of adding and subtracting noise-loops, creating color-patterns of noise while possibly splitting up the screen into smaller and smaller squares of color. The challenge is to create a noise free color combination space of peace.

Reclining man (thinking of Bombay)

Sleeper on Hyde and Sutter

Sleeper on 4th and Townsend

These images are part of my evolving passing by strangers series, a digital gut shot photo project.
When walking the sidewalks in downtown SF early in the morning one sees almost on every block a sleeper or little sleeper colonies. It's hard to watch and to imagine how fast it could go till people end up on the streets; it always reminds me of the thousands of people I have seen sleeping on sidewalks in Indian mega-citys.
I was wondering what would be the representative posture of contemporary man. Maybe the reclining posture would symbolize the state of man at the beginning of the 21st century. Either he's lying down for being oppressed, hungry or suffering of epidemic diseases or he's just reclining for being a well fed and uncritical, passive consumer.

Walking man (thinking of Alberto Giacometti)

This piece is a walking scene at the Marin Headlands (San Francisco/ Sausolito) thinking of Giacometti's thin walking figure- sculptures. He was besides Beckett one of the greatest existencialist artists and to me the greatest 20 century sculptor.
