Into the Unknown

Jurgen Trautwein’s exhibition “Into the Unknown" is his ninth show of paintings at 60SIX. Consistent with most of his painting series the artist used found objects as the canvas. Large print fashion ads in a hanging banner format provide a front and back surface for the work.

Echoing a past suite of works called “Skins”, both sides of the banners have a painted surface. In the series “Skins”, images showed through monochrome paintings and the back was latent but mostly invisible unless turning the piece. In this case the backside becomes the front, which presents controlled accidents made with additive and subtractive processes. Surfaces are built with unpredictable texture, color and composition. Nuances of printmaking, particularly mono printing appear, where the pealed paint from the studio floor merge with paint bleeding through the front. Unexpected images emerge, reminiscent of aerial topography or landscapes. No boundary exists here in what mark came from what circumstance.

Trautwein violating the surface within a finessed dance of intention, chaos, deliberation and accident, results in a rich, unbridled sensibility to these paintings.

The collection is notarized and certified on the bitcoin blockchain with the hash key of the zip of the collection embedded in the transaction. It means there's a public stamp referring to it, a proof-of-existence, since the hash-key is unique. So, the undocumented events and objects of the collection are then nonetheless proven to exist, which was partly the point, to assert an existence of the otherwise non-documented and non-documentable. In various degrees the works reflect this. In other words, blockchain is used as an archive, museum or a similar function for conservation of works, but without containing or revealing them - its only function is to certify their existence when asked.

Note the spirit's uncertainty as to his own success in appearing. The priest wonders if he really saw anything. The spirit affirms that 'The body was there if you saw it.'

Next edition will be the Summer collection, with a deadline in 20 June. A call for it will be sent out later.

One-Off Moving Image Festival 2020

We're excited to invite you to the third edition of One-Off Moving Image Festival!
This year we have two programs. In addition to showing one second movies together with 60sec movies, we're also showing long single take movies. The theme is "Browsing right and wrong".
All movies are screened during the festival February 10 - 16, 2020 in Valencia (ES) and Gol (NO) in addition to the net. We use routers and QR-codes to screen the movies on smartphones in public spaces. Since the long single take movies are considered performative and site-specific the One-Off festival takes place at the location of the movies and becomes a distributed event. In this manner we've been able to screen the year 2020 in year 2017 - and even as far back as 2011 - in an anticipatory participation or plagiarism! One-Off 2020 also offers an experimental peer screening, where the shooting site of a movie contains reference to a peer movie (a printed QR-code placed at the location) perhaps in an attempt to displace its own (psychogeographical) mapping.
We're collaborating with 60Seconds Festival in Copenhagen (DK) taking place in parallel, to physically screen a selection of the one second movies mixed with 60 seconds movies in public spaces in Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Køge and Helsingør during the festival week.
In addition, all one second movies will be included in the next Leap Second Festival, an irregular x-ennale lasting one second.

Jürgen Trautwein presents his 6th show with 60SIX, “the sound of the rain needs no translation.”

This reductive suite of paintings, like most of Trautwein’s series’ uses visual and conceptual content from his last body of work as momentum into the next. In “Train Ride to Luxor” the flat horizontal paintings with a trancelike light inner white glow bounced the viewer’s eye from flat space to deep space and back again. In the new work the viewer steps almost entirely into the deep white space where color practically disappears from the edges, almost like entering Doug Wheeler’s “infinity room” of white light and nothingness.

This series’ title and it’s individual painting titles, such as “Every Day is a Good Day” and “Neptune’s Girlfriend” translate the work’s embodiment of zen notions of the here and now. Like a Robert Ryman painting or a Jon Zurier, this work sits quietly and demands only a deep breath. Trautwein has dual sets of work in his practice. His drawings and video works (some of which he calls hypertexts) with sound and his signature “time sheets,”sublimate nervous energy and illuminate randomness and chaos. They satirize politics, technology, and as the artist says, “perpetually reoccurring human folly.” His paintings provide an escape to the calm and serenity of the present moment. The viewer finds their own meaning in confronting these minimal paintings.
